Instead they describe an algorithmic process for scoring based on reviews collected from other sites. ![]() For example: Įventually the site did include APub, as shown in the page capture for AugĪs to weighing the site's opinions, they themselves do not seem to have any opinions. ![]() In 20 the page from which I quoted did not include APub. Sadly, I cannot find a revision date on the page, but we can still learn when the page started to include APub by taking a quick visit to the Wayback Machine. To put into context my comments from three years ago on, we should take into account the content of the G2.com page as it was three years ago, not as the page appears today. None of the Computing Center's attempts at control prevented the rest of us on campus from developing our own desktop solutions suited to furthering our own work rather than locking us down to the control agenda of the Computing Center gurus. After a year or so the Computing Center moved on to other passions and NeXT was quickly forgotten. The Computing Center purchased numerous NeXT computers, seeded them around campus, where they totally failed to take hold. I told my colleagues that any product deliberately restricting its own sales was surely dead. Yes, they had an odd idea of computing virtue and purity. Sadly, the presenters emphasized that NeXT would be sold only to the education market, not to businesses. Thinking to get ahead of us, the Computing Center declared NeXT was the future and brought in a sales group to sell the idea to the rest of us. My experience with NeXT is that the machine was dead on arrival.ĭecades ago, our university Computing Center was thrashing wildly in search of a way to maintain control as we abandoned their IBM mainframe in favor of decentralized desktop computing. Interesting how this thread has evolved from speculation about the future of Affinity products to the history of the NeXT computer. Problem remains of deep shadow on left side of face which I leave as an exercise for the user. Playing with Opacity, Flow, and Hardness, brightening face more than sweater, etc. You'll spend more time on it and do a much better job. I did not take time to paint carefully along the edges of the subject. I've used this procedure to make frameable portraits from similar shots taken at outdoor weddings with overly-bright backgrounds. Paint over them in black to darken again).įollow similar procedure with additional adjustment layers if you want to darken the background foliage, etc. Paint over subject where you want her brighter (I included shoes but they appear too bright to look natural. Select the adjustment layer, not the Pixel layer that is the photo itselfħ. Press X once or twice to set color to whiteĦ. Adjust brightness and contrast to taste for the subject's best appearance. Apply Brightness/Contrast Adjustment layerĢ. Remember the adjustment layers have built-in masks.ġ. Perhaps good enough for snapshot purposes. Their histories are readily available on the Internet. ![]() Let's forgo a discussion of the many operating systems, microprocessor architectures, software solutions, and computers that were once said to be the waves of the future replacing all others. Users are looking for solutions, not for ideologically-driven technology demonstrations and imagined design purity.Īnd so the world distribution of operating systems and hardware platforms became what it is because of countless user decisions over the last 40 years. How were they to discover what the computer might be used for if they excluded entire classes of creative people from using it? Did they not realize that people from higher education go to work in business, start their own businesses, provide services to businesses? The company limited its market to higher education, telling us they would never sell to business. See my posts about Windows partial solutions at -need-to-enlarge/#comment-745313 Īs I mentioned, the NeXT rapidly disappeared indeed it almost never appeared at all despite pressure applied by various high-level administrators on our campus. It has always puzzled me that I can still use a variety of Windows software designed more than 20 years ago for low-resolution, 12" inch monitors without these Affinity user interface problems, yet Serif is unable to correct their poor, initial design decisions. Perhaps Serif will eventually make their products more user friendly for those with HiDef monitors and/or ageing eyes. Lately there is much excitement in several threads in these forums about Affinity Version 2.0. You either adjust or use competing products. Serif has so far not responded to several years of complaints about the dysfunctional tiny icons and fonts used in the Affinity apps.
